Common Culture is an artists group consisting of David Campbell, Mark Durden and Ian Brown. Founded in 1996 in Liverpool, the group has exhibited nationally and internationally, achieving recognition for their spectacular exhibitions employing fast food light-box menus at the Cornerhouse Gallery, Manchester, EAST International, Norwich, the Tate Liverpools popular exhibition Shopping A Century of Art and Consumer Culture. Common Culture has had solo shows in New York, London, Athens, Porto, Lisbon, Derry and Belfast.
David Campbell studied Fine Art at Liverpool Polytechnic (BA Hons) and the Social History of Art at Leeds University (MA). He is Reader in Fine Art and Course Director of the MFA at the University of Ulster.
Mark Durden studied Fine Art at Exeter College of Art and Design (BA Hons) and Glasgow School of Art (Postgraduate Diploma). He then studied History and Theory of Art at University of Kent (MA and PhD). He is currently Professor of Photography at Newport School of Art, Media and Design, University of Wales, UK.
Ian Brown is a Senior Lecturer at Staffordshire University and runs the MA Fine Art Course.
Durden and Campbell recently curated the international group show, Variable Capital. Critically examining arts relation to consumer culture, the exhibition included 13 artists in total, among them Andy Warhol, Larry Sultan, Louise Lawler, Santiago Sierra, Edward Burtynsky and Wang Qingsong. Newly commissioned work by Common Culture and Richard Hughes was also part of the show. A specially designed book, published by Liverpool University Press, accompanied the exhibition.
