JOÃO RUI GUERRA DA MATA
Was born in Lourenço Marques, Mozambique, but were the years that he lived in Macau, at the time a Portuguese colony, that aroused his interest in Asian culture.
He studied and trained in Graphic Design and Typography and started working in cinema in 1995.
He was invited to create the class of Art Direction/ Production Design in Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema (ESTC), having left teaching in 2011.
As Art Director / Production Designer he worked in several short and feature films from several direc-
tors, standing out the collaboration with João Pedro Rodrigues that last already for 21 years, having been co-writer, assistant director and actor with him. This col- laboration evolved in 2007 to codirecting, being CHINA, CHINA the first of a series of short-films, to which it was added in 2012, the feature film THE LAST TIME I SAW MACAO, a group of works to which the directors like to call, their “Asian films”.
In 2012 he directed O QUE ARDE CURA / AS THE FLAMES ROSE, his debut solo short, premiered in com- petition in Locarno. His work was object to several world- wide retrospectives, in the USA, JAPAN and TAIWAN.
SANTO ANTÓNIO, a for channel video installation, created with João Pedro Rodrigues for the Mimesis Art Museum in South Korea, was his first international exhi- bition (26/11/2013 to 9/02/2014).
RED DAWN, 2011 short-film, invited to be part of the “Where is China?” exhibition, made by works from 27 Chinese and Portuguese artists, simultaneously shown in Beijing, at the Beijing World Art Museum – Millennium Monument (16.05.2014 – 04.06.2014) and in Lisbon, at the Museu do Oriente – Fundação Oriente (29.05.2014 - 06.07.2014), was censored by the Chinese authorities and withdrawn from the exhibition in Beijing.
This year, the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris will show all the films directed and co-directed by João Rui Guerra da Mata and João Pedro Rodrigues, on what it will be the first full retrospective of their works, in France (25.11.2016 - 02.01.2017). The directors will also present an exhibition.
