As part of Circular - Performative Art Festival, an exhibition of video-installations.
The exhibition brings together a set of portraits
built around gaze and the experience of time. The video installations on display in “Gallery 1” - dedicated to the world of performing arts - were created between 2004 and 2006 and this is the first time that they have been displayed together in a single exhibition space. Two of these works are debuting at this exhibition.
Devant le visage, je ne pense plus pouvoir...
My work focused on portraits, questions pertaining to the representation, exposure times, the context and the circumstances in which this encounter between my gaze and the person being portrayed takes place, the relationship with my model and its consequences. I set out from the references of pictorial and photographic portraits, the processes and relationships that govern representation, but I seek the new substance of time. I use formal variants based on diverse approaches to filmic material and related processes, working around lighting, sound, voices, frontality and mirror images.
I begin to create portraits that dialogue with a universe that is familiar to me, I share reflections about time and the principle of movement, about vision and its representation, with the artists being portrayed.
The portraits are created in individual sessions, with different exposure times and in different relational contexts. In the diverse joint compositions (individual portraits, twin portraits and triptychs) faces co-exist while being autonomous, although from the first to the last instant, they are all elements that share a new spatial bond, a space saturated with time-images.
The “Circular” structure of this Festival in Vila do Conde and the Cinematic tendency of the Solar Art Gallery provided me with the ideal context to present this first gallery of portraits.
