In 2008 Animar 3, a project started in 2005, presented some new features and widens its educational activities. As in previous years, the programme had a fundamental core, the exhibition at Solar – Cinematic Art Gallery, entirely dedicated to animated cinema (mostly Portuguese films), where the relationship between the films and the techniques used in their production are analysed. This aim was further explored in the guided tours and activities targeting younger audiences, namely pupils from regional primary and secondary schools.

In addition to the exhibition at Solar and the organisation of guided tours, the project included a film programme for pupils from different age groups set up in collaboration with Portuguese and international organisations with experience in the area of education through film: Casa da Animação, in Oporto and Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival, which leads the Auvergne Regional Education Through Film project and the French production company Autour de Minuit which collaborated in the selection of the films to be presented.

However, the biggest novelty of 2088 were the workshops where pupils had the opportunity to learn some of the techniques used in animation. In two of them - one of animation with cut-outs led by Delphine Hermans and another of 3D animation led by Lorenzo degl’Innocenti – the outcome was the production of animated short films that were presented at Animar 3 closing ceremony.
A third workshop, that took place in classrooms from the Vila do Conde region, was dedicated to the construction of optical toys which were exhibited in Auditório Municipal around the same time. The Clermont-Ferrand festival led a teachers training course of education through film and the use of cinema as an educational tool drawing from their own experience in the production of pedagogic devices based on moving pictures.

Animar is an original programme that uses different venues and blurs boundaries – the movie theatre, the art gallery, the workshop, the classroom – and combines artists, trainers, teachers and pupils, bringing younger audiences closer to the way animation cinema is made and introducing them to some of its production techniques and, in the process, promoting creativity.
